Why would someone want to see a Christian Psychologist?

One of the primary barriers to seeking professional mental health support within faith communities can be concerns that therapy might undermine one's beliefs. Some individuals fear that seeking counselling, or seeing a psychologist could also be perceived as a “lack of faith” or may introduce ideologies that contradict their deeply held religious values. As a result, individuals of faith grappling with mental health struggles, abuse, or faith-related concerns may feel isolated and unsure of where to turn for help. Many seek support from clergy or faith leaders, who are deeply trusted within their communities. However, these individuals often have limited counselling and mental health training, which can make it difficult for them to effectively navigate more complex mental health issues or problems.

At Curated Mind Psychology, I aim to create a space where clients feel comfortable seeking support without fear of judgment or the imposition of external ideologies. It is crucial to recognise that faith-sensitive counselling is not about imposing religious beliefs or values on someone, but rather about offering an empathetic, understanding environment where clients can explore their struggles within the context of their beliefs. The counselling process is a partnership—where the psychologist brings expertise in mental health and emotional wellbeing, and the client brings their unique lived experience, including their spiritual and religious journey. Faith-sensitive counselling recognises that clients may hold diverse beliefs, including those within and outside of orthodox religious frameworks.

Some individuals may prefer to work with counsellors who share a similar faith background as they value having a professional mental health provider who understands the complexities of navigating religious communities and faith-based issues.  Much like other communities, such as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, who often prefer to seek mental health support from within their own cultural and community frameworks, individuals of faith may also feel more comfortable addressing their mental health challenges in a setting where their beliefs and values are understood and respected. For these groups, turning to a counsellor or psychologist that shares their worldview can provide a sense of safety and connection, ensuring that their unique experiences are honoured. Just as culturally competent care is vital for culturally diverse communities, it is equally important to offer faith-based individuals the opportunity to engage with support services that respect their spiritual and cultural needs. Faith-based counselling can therefore help address the unique pressures and expectations placed on individuals within religious contexts, such as the stigmatisation of mental health struggles, or the isolation that may result from experiencing spiritual abuse. The counsellor’s role is to honour the client’s worldview and work within that context to promote healing and growth.

Cultural psychology acknowledges the way that religious practices, beliefs, and communities shape an individual's identity, struggles, and healing processes. Faith-sensitive counselling ensures that clients are not only supported in their mental health journey but also respected for their values and experiences. A counsellor equipped to navigate the intersections of mental health and faith can provide a compassionate and safe environment for exploring difficult questions—whether related to faith, personal identity, or existential concerns—without the client feeling they are judged or misunderstood.

Is there a difference between seeing a Christian Psychologist and Spiritual Direction or Religious Teaching?

Faith-based counselling is definitely not about providing religious teaching or direction. Instead, it offers a space where individuals can bring their whole selves—including their spiritual and religious identities—into the therapeutic process, knowing they will be met with respect, understanding, and compassion. The focus of faith-sensitive counselling should always be on the emotional and mental well-being of the client. Regardless of the counsellor's personal beliefs or religious background, the therapeutic relationship is grounded in ethical principles, such as respect for client autonomy and confidentiality, and a commitment to providing nonjudgmental care. My approach is rooted in these ethical values, ensuring that all clients, regardless of their faith or belief system, feel safe and supported in their healing journey.

Are you available to see people from other faiths?

Absolutely, I am available to see individuals from all faith backgrounds. My goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental space where you can explore your mental health and personal challenges, regardless of your spiritual or religious background. I aim to support you in a way that aligns with your values, helping you navigate life’s difficulties with understanding and respect for your worldview.
